Fishing Report

Tall Tails Fishing with Captain Tony Traad guides anglers out of several different marinas in the Upper Florida Keys.  The Florida Keys are a chain of islands that extend south from Florida’s mainland to Key West.  The Keys are accessible by car driving south on U.S. Highway Number 1 or the Florida Turnpike from either Miami or Fort Lauderdale International Airports.  The major Keys of Florida’s Upper Keys include Key Largo, Islamorada, Matecumbia Key, Long Key and Duck Key.

The Keys offer a wide range of accommodations and dining from very expensive to very modest (please see the accommodations page for lodging suggestions in the Keys).  Keys sunsets are famous for their breath taking brilliance and there are many bay side tiki bars to belly up to and enjoy a sunset in paradise.  It’s a guarantee that there is no short fall of “island ambiance” in the Florida Keys.

Besides atmosphere, the Keys also offer an angler’s family plenty of activities to entertain them while he or she is away fishing.  Snorkeling and dive trips to the reefs, dolphin encounters, jet skiing, shopping, day trips to Key West and many more daily adventures await the whole family.

Typical Catches:

Permit

Snook

Bonefish

View the Upper Keys

The Upper Florida Keys offer an angler a multitude of near shore sight fishing opportunities on its ocean side flats as well as the lush grass flats of Florida Bay.  Additionally, the flats and back country waters of the Everglades National Park are close by and from Islamorada; Flamingo Marina is only a 45 minute boat ride (please see the Everglades page for a description of the Everglades).

Anglers can fish for bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracuda and sharks on the bay or ocean side flats; and in the same day fish for snook, redfish, sea trout and tarpon in the Everglades National Park. Fishing from shallow water flats skiffs, the fishing techniques utilized vary from sight fishing the shallow water flats and back country shorelines with fly rods and light spinning tackle rigged with artificial lures or live bait to live baiting the deeper channels and creeks.  Fishing in the Florida Keys is good year round with peak fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon in the fall, spring and early summer when the waters are warm but not hot.  With the exception of barracudas, when the waters on the flats get cold, the game fish typically leave the shallow flats and head for deeper water.  See the fish album or click on a species listed on this page for more seasonal information on each species.

If you are really only interested in fishing and don’t need to experience the “island ambiance” of the Keys or entertain the family, it is recommended that you stay in the Homestead/Florida City area just north of the Keys and south of Miami.  Homestead/Florida City is the gateway to the Florida Keys, Biscayne National Park (Biscayne Bay) as well as the Everglades National Park (Flamingo Marina).  Because of its location, Homestead/Florida City is a great jumping off point and allows us to trailer to and fish any of the those three areas depending on what you want to fish for, the weather considerations, where the fish are and other factors.  Additionally, If your penny pinching, hotels and restaurants in Homestead/Florida City are usually more feasible than in the Florida Keys (please see the accommodations page for hotel and restaurant information in Homestead/Florida City).
